About this deal

Steadily work your way to the top of the wall making sure that you’ve run the feather edge over every section of the wall. If you’ve laid on rather a lot you may want to stop part way, scrape off any extra plaster and then continue your way up. Each pass on the hardening plaster should see more and more trowel marks and bumps disappearing. When the plaster is almost fully hard, your final pass will trowel it to a lovely flat finish. The above is only a very brief run down of the skim plastering process, for a full and detailed tutorial on how to skim plaster, see our project here.

Gypsum is one of the components in plaster dust, and it is the one which can cause the most irritation for people. If you are a person who is working with gypsum day in and day out, chances are you could have long-term effects on your lungs.

Gypsum plaster, gypsum powder, or plaster of Paris, is produced by heating gypsum to about 120–180 °C (248–356 °F) in a kiln: [18] [13] CaSO 4 ⋅ 2 H 2 O ⟶ heat CaSO 4 ⋅ 1 2 H 2 O + 1 1 2 H 2 O ↑ {\displaystyle {\ce {CaSO4.2H2O {\overset {heat}{{}->{}}}{CaSO4.1/2H2O}+ 1\!1/2 H2O If you opt to use timber battens, once plastered up to and the plaster is cured, you will then need to remove the beads and then fill in the gaps using base coat plaster. However if you use galvanised beads, these can stay in the wall and once covered, you’ll never know they are there. Using beads is probably the way to go If you are exposed to plaster dust without a mask on, you will want to get yourself to an area with fresh air as soon as possible.

If you are around plaster dust every day and never protect yourself, you may start to develop a cough or even asthma. Sometimes some walls need to come down, and other times, there are simply hidden dangers behind the paint, furniture, or cabinetry. Once you have mixed together the colored plaster you’d like to use for this Plaster of Paris craft, you can get started with the mini planters. Take your feather edge or what ever straight edge you’re using (preferably metal rather than timber) and lay it across the two beads on either side at the bottom of the section you have filled.

How to Make Mini Planters from Colored Plaster

A lot of times, when trying to hang a TV on a wall or doing some plumbing in a bathroom, you are going to have to drill through the plaster. Some people who are exposed to plaster dust will have no issues at all, while others will be highly irritated by it. Which way you work, whether it’s side to side or up and down is entirely up to you, there’s no right or wrong way, as long as the plaster is on the wall, that’s all that matters. For full information on skim coat plaster including how to mix it, lay it on and finish it, see our skim coat plastering project here. The surrounding forests of the new village of Economy provided straight grain, old- growth oak trees for lath. [10] Hand split lath starts with a log of straight grained wood of the required length. The log is split into quarters and then smaller and smaller bolts with wedges and a sledge. When small enough, a froe and mallet were used to split away narrow strips of lath. Farm animals provided hair and manure for the float coat of plaster. Fields of wheat and grains provided straw and hay to reinforce the clay plaster. But there was no uniformity in clay plaster recipes.

If your hands and arms feel fine dealing with this dust, you tend to forget that it could still be causing irritation by breathing it in. Gently tap the filled molds on a flat surface to get out any air bubbles and then aside until hardened (1-2 hours should be fine). Of all of the things that you will end up breathing in and dealing with while making home improvements, plaster dust is really not the most extreme of them. Clear area: Plastering and preparing surfaces for plaster are both messy jobs so clear out any furniture that can be moved and cover anything that can’t, including floors, with dust sheets

The best way to avoid having issues with plaster dust is to wear a mask when you are working with it.

Obviously read on below for the theory part, but once you’ve read all you can read, just getting on with it will teach you how to put the theory into practice. Preparing a Wall for Base Coat Plastering Green tea is very healthy overall, and it helps the lungs to expand and bit and make breathing easier. FYI – You could probably use in less powdered tempera than that, to be honest. It really doesn’t take much. The more color you add, the more vibrant it will be, put if you add too much, it will eventually cause the plaster to set incorrectly or not at all. How to Make Mini Planters from Colored Plaster 1.Mix the colored plaster.Once flat and level and starting to cure the next job is to them close the surface or “rub in” as it’s known. When you can put your finger lightly on the surface without leaving a mark, its time to start. Take a nail, or a small screwdriver, and drag it lightly, in a coil or crisscross shape, over the surface of the plaster. The scratch should be no more than 1mm deep and all of the wall should be covered with no more than 150mm between any of the scratches.
