In My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Issue #94. Pinkie Pie and Cheese Sandwich explore a cavern underneath Canterlot (created by a sinkhole opening up). The cave contains Muffleta Moss, which Cheese accidentally brings to the surface, resulting in all of Canterlot falling silent. The castle and its inner workings are featured in greater detail in Castle Mane-ia when Twilight and her friends all find their way to the old castle for varying reasons. The first new room in the castle to be shown is the library, which houses an abundance of ancient books and a large stone Alicorn bust. Star spiders have also taken up residence in the library. In Uprooted, the restored Tree of Harmony grows up through the center of the castle ruins. The ruins also appear in She's All Yak and Student Counsel.One significant room discovered by Twilight, with the assistance of Spike and Angel, is a personal reading room for the royal sisters off the main library behind a secret door. This small chamber has a small reading couch and some throw pillows. The room also features a raised reading stand upon which rests the personal journal of Princess Celestia and Princess Luna from the time before Luna's fall to become Nightmare Moon. Illumination to the room is through two intact stained glass windows, a blue one depicting Luna's moon and a yellow one depicting Celestia's sun. Canterlot is built into the side of a tall mountain that overlooks Ponyville. Twilight Sparkle and Spike travel the distance between the two locations in a short amount of time, riding in a flying chariot pulled by two Pegasus royal guards in Friendship is Magic, part 1. Princess Celestia travels in the same way in Swarm of the Century, and in Sweet and Elite, Rarity's friends manage to get from Ponyville to Canterlot within a day. In MMMystery on the Friendship Express, Pinkie Pie and her friends travel from Ponyville to Canterlot via train on an overnight trip. The spires of Canterlot, protruding from the mountain, have been shown to be visible from Ponyville. The castle is shown to be filled with numerous secret doors and traps, some of which Twilight's friends inadvertently set off and get themselves trapped in and most of which are controlled by a large pipe organ in the castle basement. Other rooms and areas in the castle include the "Hall of Hooves"—a hallway lined with torch wall-mounts shaped like pony legs—a corridor lined with suits of pony armor, and a basement chamber that houses the aforementioned "Organ to the Outside". External shots of the castle show dragon statues on its ledges. The Adventures in Canterlot storybook, Festival of Friendship, features a competition in Canterlot. The tree-castle bears some resemblance to the Golden Oak Library, at least the aboveground portion of which is destroyed earlier in the episode by Lord Tirek, but is many times larger and appears to have a multi-level castle in its branches, which includes a great balcony, two spires, and a tower. The structure has at least one banner flying on the side marked with Twilight Sparkle's cutie mark, and the top bears a large crystal star. Two sets of five strings of beads hang off the side of the structure much like the white beads that hang off the Tree of Harmony. At the foot is a great golden stair for the two-leaved golden door into the tree's body. Two open lancet windows flank the door. When asked about her bell ringing duties, Pinkie says she rang the school bell for five minutes by standing inside the bell and banging her head against it, after which she was told that was "good enough". She went to the Everfree Forest to gather bluebells for a "finish ringing the school bell" party, but felt chilly and had to wrap herself in the tarp she had meant to carry the bluebells in. She then caught sight of Fluttershy and Rarity going into the castle and followed them, because she thought they were heading to an "everypony come to the scary old castle and hide from each other while I play the organ" party. In The Beginning of the End, King Sombra invades the castle and covers its interior with dark crystals.Twilight ends up spending hours at Fluttershy's cottage cleaning Angel. Fluttershy wants to rest up for their pancake breakfast the next day and says Twilight needs to get the castle ready. Twilight insists that the castle is fine and flies off to help Pinkie Pie with the pancakes. According to the My Little Pony The Movie prequel chapter book, The Stormy Road to Canterlot, the Storm King's second-in-command, Tempest Shadow, originally lived near Canterlot. In The Ending of the End, the castle is almost entirely destroyed by Chrysalis, Tirek, and Cozy Glow, who then use what's left as their base of operations.
A piece of concept art for how the castle would've appeared in My Little Pony The Movie is shown in The Art of My Little Pony: The Movie. Enterplay collectible card game Canterlot Nights #58 C mentions that Perfect Pace is the official timekeeper for Canterlot. Canterlot Castle is the palace where Princess Celestia and Princess Luna lived and ruled Equestria from, first featured in The Best Night Ever. It consists of at least the throne room, a large ballroom, a kitchen, a telescope observatory, and the Pony Princess Wedding Castle ceremonial hall. Starting with School Daze - Part 2, the throne room is redesigned so that now both Celestia and Luna have their own thrones, patterning after its design in My Little Pony The Movie.
