About this deal

Whether or not this is theoretically problematic for adult readers aside, if my kids were reading it (when otherwise old enough) I would want to read it as well and have some very explicit discussions about the way consent is handled in the book, especially if my kids were still learning about how to navigate sexual relationships. As a transitional book between two Court of Thorns and Roses series, A Court of Frost and Starlight includes a hefty preview of the upcoming series launch featuring longtime supporting characters Nesta and Cassian.

As an 18 year old, I truly enjoyed the book. I have read a lot of the comments about the book and see a lot of 13-15 y/o mentioning the explicit intercourse scenes and how they are disturbed by them. I totally understand that for the younger readers the description of the scenes may be too vivid and therefore recommend the book for readers 15 and up ! Things were so perfect so far that I was getting scared. Scared that all that perfectness was going to be ripped away and I was going to be one emotional mess. And for a minute there, I was. You guys know what I'm talking about. Okay, so now I’m just going to go through what you should know about the book. Again this review is being aimed at parents and I hope it helps kids sway their partners into letting them read it (I’m rooting for you!) I read this when I was 12 and it didn't bother me, lots of people are saying that there is too much sex and no one under 18 or 16 should read it, but to be honest it's not that bad. I'm desensitised to it, mainly because I used to read a lot of Wattpad but also because I watch 18s and a lot of sex on the TV.

All the contradictions. Feyre leave her abusive boyfriend, but then falls in the arms of a man who breaks every bone of a guy who called her names. Uh-uh. And if you say “He did that because he called her ‘whore’, and he’d been called whore too, and the trauma”, I say: how do you know Tamlin’s behaviour wasn’t due to his trauma too. Maybe he just needed time. But it’s okay if it’s Rhysand that does that because epitome-of-perfection, remember? His being all possessive is okay. He can say things like “She’s mine” and snarl at people who so much as look at her. And don’t get me started on indecent exposure. Families can talk about stories that put their heroes in impossible situations, where all their available choices have terrible costs. What other examples do you know?

Also, apparently Feyre hates painting now and is totally upset that Tamlin gives her a set of paints as a present. Because how dare he get her something that she used to like but didn't tell him that she doesn't like anymore. How dare he not be a mind-reader like Rhysand who is a prince among men. My 16 year old daughter read this series recently and my younger daughter (Age 12) who is an avid fantasy reader wanted to as well. I decided that I would read the book to determine whether it would be appropriate. I will admit, it was okay, however, definitely not appropriate for my youngest. However, I would recommend it to teens 14 and older and adults.

Oh oh oh but there are some other ships that get my blood pumping even though they're not sailing -- YET THEY SHOULD. They totally should. Mozriel and Nessian embody pure awesomeness. And Elain and Lucien will be so interesting to see play out! Families can talk about how holiday gatherings in A Court of Frost and Starlight are used as a device to tell the story of the people in attendance. What other gatherings are used for the same reason? Feyre completes the first task, hunting a giant, carnivorous worm through an underground maze, but she is badly wounded. Feyre is near death when Rhysand comes to her cell and heals her, but not before making a bargain. If she survives the challenges, she must spend a week of every month with him for the rest of her life. He marks her arm and hand with an elaborate tattoo to seal their deal. At night, Rhysand forces Feyre to wear revealing clothing, attend Amarantha’s parties as his guest and flaunts her in front of Tamlin. Tamlin, who is never allowed to see Feyre outside of the challenges, feigns indifference. Ok. This may be my favorite book ever, but I read it too young. I read this book way too young. I was 12. This is an incredible book with incredible character development, but it was not a good way to learn about everything but the biology of sex. While there are things I really like about this book overall, those things should wait until someone is of the age they can appreciate them!
