Depictions of rats in fiction are historically inaccurate and negative. The most common falsehood is the squeaking almost always heard in otherwise realistic portrayals (i.e. non anthropomorphic). While the recordings may be of actual squeaking rats, the noise is uncommon – they may do so only if distressed, hurt, or annoyed. Normal vocalizations are very high-pitched, well outside the range of human hearing. Rats are also often cast in vicious and aggressive roles when in fact, their shyness helps keep them undiscovered for so long in an infested home. I was looking at a group of rats the other day and suddenly realized I didn’t know how to reference them. I went away and decided to research what the collective noun is for this particular rodent. DI James Clark suspects that this isn't the tragic accident it initially appears and calls on Nell and her ecological skills to help uncover the murderer. Nell discovers that the case is more complex than she imagined yet is determined to uncover the truth. No further details to avoid spoilers.

Probably not if you compare it with the Bosavi woolly rat, a species discovered in 2009. Believed to be the biggest rat, it is more than 32 inches (81 cm) long (including the tail) and weighs more than three pounds (1.36 kg). By comparison, the common house rat is about 20 inches (50 cm) long and weighs approximately 12 ounces (0.34 kg). Unfortunately, scientific studies have determined that common rats are getting larger. On the positive side, researchers think that common rats’ physiology prevents them from becoming gigantic rats. In New York City, for example, researchers determined that rats would likely never exceed 2 pounds (1 kg).A big complicated event to run, some ecological work to complete, and a dead body. Although that is a misquote from the gangster film Taxi! (1931), rats have come to mean traitors or snitches. Why? Partly it’s due to their bad reputation as filthy and deadly creatures (see below) and also because rats will flee sinking ships and collapsing houses, giving the impression of abandonment. This series continues to be unique in its combination of cozy, British murder mystery (no graphic sex scenes! very little swearing! many descriptions of hedgerows and houses!) with ecological conservation, and for that I continue my general recommendation of the Dr. Nell Ward series. What dipped my rating from 4 stars to 3 stars (besides the general relationship drama which I do not find interesting) was including DI James Clark’s POV; he is Nell’s ex who cheated on her and I honestly don’t care about whether or not his relationship with Shannon is going to work out.
