Compared to a regular high-definition presentation on Paramount+, the Blu-ray release of Strange New Worlds is going to be your best way to get the best visual experience watching the series, from the exploratory opening title sequence to the many space adventures Captain Pike’s crew experienced over the ten-episode season. Pike’s Peak (17 minutes) – Anson Mount takes fans through his journey as Captain Christopher Pike in the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, providing a peek (get it?) into his portrayal with intimate footage throughout the season. This includes mobile phone camera personal logs of Anson’s experiences during his quarantine to wait before production of SNW season 1, and then preparing for the season, including practicing riding horses, their first day on the bridge set, and more. A particularly touching moment comes when Mount is standing on the Enterprise bridge set reading a lovely note from Mike Gold of NASA congratulating the cast and crew on the beginning of filming. All Those Who Wonder – Pike and crew come face-to-face with their demons, and scary monsters too, when their landing party is stranded on a barren planet with a ravenous enemy. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that during my lifetime, it’s likely there’ll be some sort of Star Trek and/or Star Wars movie or television series. That’s a bold statement, but given that Star Trek is now 50+ years old, I think the odds are good that it might happen. Nevertheless, it’s “now” and we’ve got Star Trek: Strange New Worlds– a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery and also serving as a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series. Given that my favorite Star Trek show was The Next Generation, it’s also been a sour spot for me as no Star Trek series has come even close to comparing with that. That’s just me, of course. There have been no shortage of choices…we’ve had Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: Discovery and Picard. Suffice it to say, if you’re a Trekkie – there’s got to be a show for you. For those of you aiming a bit higher, however, the season will make its debut on 4K UHD Blu-ray this May, with a limited-edition Steelbook release featuring the show in its best overall presentation format yet. The 4K edition will include all the same bonus features found on the Blu-ray release, along with high-quality include Dolby Vision dynamic HDR coloring.I do sometimes though look at my risk-taking parent’s life with a certain envy. Audio commentary: Episode 101 – “Strange New Worlds” – Series star Anson Mount and co-creator Akiva Goldsman have a lively commentary on the premiere episode of the series. Mount has a great voice, is a big TOS fan, and is always engaging to listen to. Documentary features I sincerely believe that there are some people at the top of the media industry who make extraordinary wealth, while the people who write the scripts, news or criticism, those who do a lot of the technical work like editing etc., work long hours for scale or as piecework. Making much of the work gig based on top of that seems to baked-in.Overall, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is an excellent addition to the Star Trek franchise, delivering exciting action, thought-provoking ideas, and emotionally charged character development. It's a must-watch for any Star Trek fan and a great starting point for those new to the franchise. It has helped spawned a whole new line of Trek shows like the spin off series Strange New World (which is a hybrid show of TOS and Discovery). Windows Media Player won’t even attempt to play it and VCL Media player won’t play it, just keeps giving errors.
