About this deal

Finding the creature is also very satisfying, even if it wasn’t you who figured it out. (But let’s be honest, it feels awesome to be the one to find it.) Everyone goes immediately from the near silent gameplay to exclamations of “Yes!” And “Ah! I was so close!” It’s also a lot of fun to see how many clues everyone had figured out.

For example, if your clue is 'within one space of a forest', that includes every forest space, and every space which touches a forest space. Cryptid is a perfectly family friendly game that you can enjoy playing with just about anyone, but due to the reading element and the need for total independence in play, players will most likely need to be about 10-12 to be able to enjoy it themselves. While the simple binary of the game’s information system may make it seem manageable, if you want to win you’ll need to make sure you’re a step ahead of everyone else. That’s not always as easy as it seems in a game where information is accessible to all and you are forbidden from lying. Which is where the next layer to Cryptid begins to reveal itself after a handful of plays, because while you must always tell the truth with your yeses and nos, there’s no rule against misdirection.

The map is the area where your search will be taking place, and serves as the focus of the game. It consists of six numbered map tiles, divided into hexagonal spaces. Each player has their own set of cubes and discs, which they will place on the board when they are forced to give the other players information. A cube means that space cannot be the creature's habitat, according to that player's clue.

Players only have one clue and must be able to not only read the clue on their own, but also understand what that clue means in relation to spaces on the map. They’ll have to be able to analyze each space to know whether or not the monster could be found there based on their clue alone. On top of that, they’ll also have to be able to deduce the clues of others based on their yes/no responses throughout the game as well. This can be a challenging puzzle for anyone that will definitely prove a touch too difficult for younger players. Summary Anniversary update!: I started making Cryptid Farm in 2019, and it's been a whole year since I uploaded Cryptid Farm in 2020, thanks for playing! This update adds lots of useful quality of life features, like bonus animations, a dynamically moving camera, a short tutorial, and some moderation settings in the Player List. If you come into Urban Legends expecting a two-player, abstract, tug-of-war, I think you’re going to love it. If you’re expecting clues, a process of elimination, and some real gosh-darned deduction, you’re going to be disappointed. One thing’s for sure though, and that this game is an attractive little creature. The cubes and discs are irresistibly tactile, and Kwanchai Moriya’s artwork is – as always – fantastic. Final thoughts This isn’t a game for those who want a lot of theme. I’m glad they went for something unusual, but you never feel like Cryptozoologists. This can be excused because that’s not why you play a puzzle, no one has attempted to add theme to a Sudoku. You can’t take your eyes off the game when playing. As any player can Question any other player on their turn you must always stay engaged with the game. Not that you will need any encouragement to pay attention, all cubes and discs are important to every player. Only by constantly evaluating the board state will you solve the puzzle and win the game. The clever bit is that however your board is set up, there will only be one possible space where your animal could live. Your goal is to find it before anyone else – to do that, you’re going to have to ask some questions. The player you questioned must say whether the space could be the habitat according to their clue, and places either a disc or a cube of their color on the selected space, to indicate whether the creature could be there or not. Crytpid isn't out yet, but nevertheless, it sits on the table, a cryptic puzzle: at once real and unreal. Of course, it draws players like a honeypot.
