The code machine in the novel is very similar to the German Enigma machine, which was well known to Fleming because of his work in Naval Intelligence, but was unknown to the public at the time, as it was still secret. Film critic James Berardinelli cited this as his favourite Bond film, writing "Only From Russia with Love avoids slipping into the comic book realm of Goldfinger and its successors while giving us a sampling of the familiar Bond formula (action, gadgets, women, cars, etc.). With his fifth book, Ian Fleming really wanted to step up his game. A pure Cold War spy thriller, From Russia, With Love features Bond’s attempts at getting his hands on Russia’s Spektor cipher machine. Note the use again of a variation on the word “spectre”. All women want to be swept off their feet. In their dreams they long to be slung over a man’s shoulder and taken into a cave and raped.

Along with Irma Bunt, Rosa Klebb was an inspiration for the character of Frau Farbissina from the Austin Powers series. My stomach clenched painfully at the thought of reading this book again. I couldn't remember exactly why, but I knew it was going to be bad. In fact, I put off reading this for a day or two, trying to mentally prepare myself for what was coming. It didn't work.
