About this deal

Unlike the set-top box discussed above, the Soundbox is HD-only, so customers with 4K TVs won't be able to enjoy the benefits of UHD. Yet because the Netbox 4K only has one tuner, no other channels can be watched while the programme is being recorded. So, it isn't a great option for customers who record lots, but it might be useful for those who occasionally want to record one or two programmes when they go out. The Netgem Soundbox is a combined TV box and soundbar that offers access to the same apps and channels as the Netbox 4K but also works as an audio system. Live channels including 125 HD channels in addition to Freeview – with 45+ channels dedicated to sport such as MLB.TV, The Rugby Network and Pop kids. It doesn't support many on-demand apps, but for a box at this price point it's actually pleasing to see access to YouTube, a weather app and IPTV content.

But if you just want to occasionally record a show here and there – this can fit the bill. 4K Ultra HD On The Netgem NetboxOverall, it's one of the cheapest ways to watch Freeview as well as catch-up TV, but is exclusively available to Virgin Media broadband customers. Sky Glass is delivered via the internet, and the BT Pro Box has had a recent update to allow channels to be available via the internet if a user does not have an aerial. Although the inclusion of YouTube in Netgem’s app lineup is a step in the right direction, there’s still a Netflix-shaped hole in the service, and for some users that’s going to be a deal breaker.

One benefit of this new layout is that you’re exposed to content you may not have originally sought out; for example, in the movie section of the app we found lots of films hosted on BBC iPlayer, which is somewhere you may not have initially thought to look for films. At the very least, you’re going to find your Freeview box has HD connectivity and a well-presented electronic programme guide, or as it’s sometimes known, EPG. This gives you instant access to the upcoming television schedule and allows you to set reminders for shows that you can’t afford to miss. Catch up with Freeview Play Customers may prefer this shorter deal, but others may not want to be tied to a contract at all and would rather buy the box outright. The problem then becomes the fact that premium content is missing from the box, removing one of the main attractions of Netgem TV. Low-cost broadband and phone provider TalkTalk, has now launched its brand new 4K TV offer, with a streaming and Freeview box that comes from Netgem. It's similar to the wi-fi boosting systems we see from broadband providers, with the difference that this is designed to work with routers from multiple ISPs.

What is Netgem TV?

After a couple of days I got used to the Netbox 4K’s idiosyncrasies, and using the smartphone app can help because, while it still goes heavy on recommendations, it’s easier to get to the regular TV guide. You can set reminders and cast programmes to your TV straight from the app, which also means you can spend less time using the remote. A TV box is a small electronic device that you connect to the television to transform it into a Smart TV. Some of the TV’s today already use his kind of smart technology but if you have a television set that doesn’t then you can expand its capabilities with a TV box. Yes I was informed by Netgem that the Now App should be integrated and operational from May, one thing I expected from day one, but it had to be specifically coded for TalkTalk boxes, as Netgem don’t normally support the Now TV App hence the delay

Another thing to consider is the audio passthrough. This will enable the device to decode and translate the compressed sound files. This will make everything sound better and will give you a much better entertainment experience. You should also consider the dynamic refresh rate switching. This is the rate on how your TV processes what you are watching. All in all, it’s a decent selection of apps and channels, but Netflix is notably missing, and so is NOW TV. However, Netgem reiterate that restrictions enforced by Freeview mean that channels on that platform can only be watched on TV and require that TV to be connected via an aerial - an unavoidable limitation for mobile app users. It bundles a Freeview receiver with a smart TV service, offering access to a range of on-demand and catch-up apps including BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All4, My5, YouTube, and subscription-based services like Netflix, Disney Plus, and Prime Video.

The Netgem box does have limitations in that it only has one tuner and no throughput to the TV. But then the new box too is a streaming one only with no recording function at all, but has more functionality being an Android-based box, so you can add more streaming channels from the Play store.

And what’s more, TalkTalk is the first ISP in Europe to launch TikTok on a set top box. Enabling its customers to enjoy everything they love about TikTok from the comfort of their couch. Netgem, a company based in France, has two operation models in the UK – first, customers can buy its Netgem Netbox 4K as a standalone Freeview box. The update will happen automatically in standby mode. Alternatively, you can access the update manually through the settings menu.TalkTalk has partnered with Netgem to launch its new 4K TV Box to fibre customers - offering ultra-HD TV, over 70 channels and 30 apps
