About this deal

There is also Fangio, a hedgehog with Argentinian blood, who sometimes stays in a box in the Sawdust family's garage, being fed on bread and milk.

Unlike Bond's more famous character, Paddington Bear, Olga is a teller of tall tales in the style of Baron Munchausen. There's a World of books to choose from such as: Children's Books, Range includes Baby Books (0-3), Books for Toddlers (3-5), Early Readers (5-7), Childrens Story books (7-11), Young Teens (11-14), Young Adults (14-16) and Childrens Educational Books. At Books2Door, we believe that reading is a fundamental skill that every child should have to help improve their vocabulary, grammar, and critical thinking skills. So yeah, I was really looking forward to this one, because I love guinea pigs (and other rodents as well) and I just love it when books are about them. Although Olga is initially jealous of them, as they are kept in Karen's room and seem to be her favourites, she quickly warms up to them. Sometime BBC cameraman Michael Bond was inspired by a last-remaining puppet bear on Selfridges shelf and memories of wartime evacuees to create possibly the most beloved character in children’s literature.Olga da Polga is a fictional guinea pig, who is the heroine of a series of books for children written by Michael Bond and published between 1971 and 2002. In 2022, the BBC commissioned 13 episodes of a live-action TV series of Olga da Polga for CBeebies, featuring Julie Wilson Nimmo and Greg Hemphill. This is not intended to be a full statement of all your rights under the Distance Selling Regulations.

But even though she has lots to do, she still finds time to entertain her friends with her tall tales and amazing stories. The character of Olga da Polga is herself based on a guinea pig belonging to Michael Bond's daughter Karen. Although they are not always sure whether to believe everything Olga says, one thing is certain - since Olga moved in, life is never dull! Although it is written as a fantastical tale from an animal's point of view, it reveals a good insight into how and why this particular species (guinea pig or cavey) behaves.Starting rumours, making up tall tales (which I truly didn't like and I was dreading them when they popped up), thinking she is so much more superior to anyone (and bragging about it), and much much more.

The real life Karen also features in the book as the character Karen Sawdust, who understands Olga da Polga better than her parents do, kind though they are. Plus this being a book by Michael Bond, author of Paddington Bear, there is mention of Peru where Paddington also hailed from. Implausibly, he is Olga da Polga's friend, but otherwise, he behaves in the stories exactly as a cat would. The stories and the characters, especially Olga are so wholesome and believable and sweet, with an old school charm. The typical plot of each story is that something fairly ordinary happens to Olga, and she gives her animal friends a wildly exaggerated version of events, subsequently revealed to be untrue by what the humans say. I was so terribly glad for the humans that they didn't have to hear Olga's stories, but I felt sorry for the animals.
