About this deal

Harris, and Paul Martineau plumb Tress’s work and archives, studying ephemera, personal correspondence, unpublished notes, diaries, contact sheets, and more to uncover how he went from earning his living as a social documentarian in Appalachia to producing surreal work of “imaginative fiction. The Need to Know, a photo book, is my exploration of the meager details that emerged from brief and cryptic conversations with my father and my curiosity about Cold War espionage and its impact upon my family at the time. MS Was it then never your intention to share this work with others in a large way, not even in your thirties? The Scourged Back , meanwhile, depicts Gordon, a formerly enslaved man with grotesque scars on his back from repeated whippings. His story is a singular and surprising one, all the more so because the recent acclaim that has followed the rediscovery of his body of work is, he insists, of little consequence to him.

His modus operandi was to arrive in a new place, ask police which neighborhoods to avoid, then head directly to those places. A new book—the first-ever collection of [Baldwin] Lee’s work—and a solo exhibition in New York make the case that he is one of the great overlooked luminaries of American picture-making.

After experiencing the collection firsthand in Tulsa, each of the authors was asked to select a single item that beguiled or inspired them.

I wanted them to be open ended and subject to the many different interpretations that people brought to them. He grasped, thanks in part to his own upbringing as the son of Chinese immigrants, the oppressive systems and subtle conditioning that shaped the lives of those he met. He wanted to capture some spark of his initial impression, but reforming the exact permutation was impossible. After teaching on the East Coast, Lee inaugurated the photography program in 1982 at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he spent over three decades as a professor. In 2008, Swedish photographer Sebastian Sardi, inspired by an article exposing hidden mining-related incidents, embarked on a photography journey. For all that, the experience of travelling in the deep south shook him up and sharpened his sense of injustice. Designed to expose students to areas outside their immediate field of study, it reflected not just White’s thoughts on art, but his interest in eastern mysticism, religion and philosophy. During the spring term of his first year, he took a 2000-mile road trip from Tennessee through Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and Georgia, exploring his new surroundings. Without formal training, he explored mines and ventured to India's Jharkhand state to document coal miners in Dhanbad, known as the "coal capital. Even while active, Lee did not seek publicity or attention for his work, and quitting photography did not burnish his profile.

Must-See Photography Books of 2022: The first collection of remarkable work, made in the 1980s in the American South, by a Chinese-American photographer who, under the influence of Walker Evans, saw his Black subjects with an inherently incisive and compassionate eye. When I was five, my father told me I was going to go to MIT [Massachusetts Institute of Technology] and, years later, I did. He lived for forty more years with the sobering awareness that despite the advantages of experience, knowledge, support, money, and stature he was unable to do what he had done as a young man. Lee described his process, in the published conversation with curator Jessica Bell Brown, as beginning with unfolding a map, then traveling one hundred miles away from his home in any direction (“far enough from my known world to be prepared to accept the new”), then culminating with “flawed theater. The resulting portfolio of atmospheric images and graceful portraits was only recently collected as a monograph, published by Hunters Point Press. Eye mama was created by BAFTA-nominated filmmaker and photographer Karni Arieli during the pandemic, when everyone around the world was in lockdown and spending more time in the home, often consumed by caregiving.
