This makes it impossible to assess whether the sample group is truly representative of a diverse cross section of DPT programs nationwide and potentially limits the generalizability of our findings. In an effort to conceptualize a standardized curricular approach, DPT programs should consider the pros and cons to dedicated courses or learning activities versus integrating LGBTQ+ topics throughout existing course content. The need for training programs to be proactive in acknowledging and supporting diversity was identified.

As stated in the review of literature, the APTA's 2014 Blueprint for Teaching Cultural Competence in Physical Therapy Education identifies primary dimensions of diversity as age, race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity/nationality, mental/physical ability, socioeconomic status, and religion. But, I am the only faculty person in my department doing anything like this, which sends the message this isn't important. Through her practice and length of stay, she also influenced the rest of the staff at the ONE Archives through asking questions about their work and the collection and offering ideas about what to collect and other possible engagements.The survey gathered information on the current and optimal number of curricular hours spent on equitable care for LGBTQ patients and perceived barriers to inclusion of LGBTQ curriculum. When cultural competence is infused across the coursework, faculty and students understand that it an essential, not an elective, knowledge and skill. We will use this momentum and this project as a model to host similar endeavours that so gracefully engage with collections, history, and art. After the session, students and faculty reported increased knowledge and awareness regarding LGBTQ health issues, ideas about how to change their practice patterns, and updated communication skills and style. Although the project began with a tight focus on lesbian pulp novels, the project later expanded to examining the legacy of these pulp novels, and how this marked a shift in lesbian literature toward women’s grassroots publishing.

This special issue explores LGBT clinical competence, professional training, and ethical care within an interdisciplinary context and, to our knowledge, represents the first attempt to address LGBT clinical competence from a multidisciplinary health care perspective. Data from the 2009 Lambda Legal Health Care Fairness survey (n = 4,916) showed that nearly 56% of LGB and 70% of transgender/gender–nonconforming people reported experiencing at least one type of discrimination in care, alienating these populations from the health care system and perpetuating documented disparities.Although common health concerns exist across these populations, unique needs also exist among subgroups.
