About this deal

In the morning and late afternoon they locate a trail and lap them up with their short, sticky tongues. Essentially, capillary action allows the lizard to suck water from all over its body – an amazing adaptation!

Not only does it make them risky to touch or bite for predators, it also makes them difficult to be swallowed as well. There is a circulatory system of tiny channels (5 to 150 µm wide) created between the scales were this capillary phenomenon takes place. It has micro grooves and tiny channels on their skin, which enables it to collect water and for it to flow without assistance to their mouth to drink. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Their scientific name, Moloch horridus, is derived from the Latin word meaning rough/bristly (horridus). Females are usually attracted when a male walks in an unusual gait, waves his legs and bobs his head all as a routine used to find a mate. Any water that gets into the grooves between its thorns is drawn by capillary action to its mouth, allowing the thorny dragon to suck water from all over its body. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has graded it as ’Of least concern‘ on its Red List.

The Thorny Devil is a small Australian lizard that has many different names, including the thorny devil, the mountain devil, thorny lizard, moloch and thorny dragon. They are almost completely inactive during the hottest summer months (January and February) and the coldest winter months (June and July), when they take refuge in underground burrows. We've made the conscious decision for aesthetic and environmental reasons to print on matte instead of shiny card. Thorny devils can inflate their chests with air to appear bigger for predators and scare them as it makes it harder to swallow them. In Australia, the only place on Earth where the thorny devil can be found, it has been protected for several years as part of the Wildlife Conservation Act of 1950.

gonna look this up, was something to do with restrictions placed on the lizard due to the surroundings i think that forced them to eat readily available prey, but may have been choice, cannot remember. The scientific name of the thorny devil is ‘Moloch horridus’, which was inspired by John Milton’s poem ‘Paradise Lost’. Being entirely reliant on ant populations, the Thorny Devil is vulnerable to habitat loss and disturbance.

Not only does their spiny armor protect them from predators, it also helps them absorb water in their arid habitat.Although the sand lizard is not considered endangered, the population has had a decline but not just from predators capturing and eating them. They eat a specific species of ant mostly, possibly others also, but mainly ' Ochetellus', and they eat them by the thousands everyday! Thorny devils are designated as least concern as assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
