The film’s score, primarily the choir, ends up making the most use of the surrounds and the lower frequency, and it’s all mixed loudly yet without drowning out anything important. There is also discussion of working the theme of redemption into the sets using objects wrapped in plastic sheeting as a sign of things being a work in progress.

One has to suppose that those in charge of creating that film decided that it would either be confusing or unnecessary for audiences, when actuality, the film itself was. opinions, and I'm probably not quite the fan of Flatliners that Marty is, but I'm scoring the film the same as he did. The 4K UHD edition does not include a HD Blu-ray, so making the selection between these really depends on what your home tech is like and your personal preference.First AD John Kretchmer reflects on his time on this film in the segment Hereafter (2022, 14 minutes). As the movie comes closer to its climax, however, it begins to feel more and more like all of this was created simply to offer up a gimmicky twist ending, one that is not only easy to see coming but which definitely caters to the lowest common denominator. In the featurette “The Conquest of Our Generation,” Filardi discusses how his and Schumacher’s ideas for what the film is about differ — Schumacher’s being an exploration of gods and monsters, while Filardi examined atonement — and, in the watching, you can see both ideas billow to the surface and mix wonderfully.

There’s frequent panning during certain sequences, and careful placement of certain sounds definitely have impact. They go over the score and the look of the film and also offer up insight into the backgrounds of the different cast and crew members that worked on the picture in addition to offering some critical analysis of the picture along the way. At startup, viewers are taken directly to the menu screen with full-motion clips and music playing in the background. Mixing religion, philosophy and horror altogether, the story does reduce the wider question and focuses solely on those who flatlined, each with their own individual nightmare to deal with or overcome.Each one of the friends goes under (except Steckle) and each re-live some bad incident/occurrence while dead, which then follows them back to the live world. Joel Schumacher’s sure-handed direction gives the film a unique quality that the other ghostly-themed films released in that era don’t really have. Atonement – Composer James Newton Howard and orchestrator Chris Boardman give us some input on their collaboration as well as the music heard in the movie.

As they discuss the Chicago shoot, scenes of the locations today are intercut with shots from the film. Among them was Flatliners, which was a hit that had the obvious advantage of an all-star cast of established and newly-successful young actors: Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin, and Oliver Platt.Nelson is the god who made corporeal (to some degree) the internal trauma that none of the four allowed themselves to face for one reason or another.

The inspiration for the story, touched on in the commentary, comes from the term “accountability” being thrown around during the Iran-Contra scandal, and his friend dying for 15-seconds (in the commentary Reesman and Eyer mention his friends was actually dead for a minute-and-fifteen seconds and that it was from an allergic reaction to anesthesia). But Nelson’s experiment has caused Billy to cross over as well and he’s not making life easy for him. The only drawback of this premise is Julia Roberts’ character, who’s done nothing wrong and simply wants closure.For clarity, horror movies terrified me as a child and I’ve only recently started going back to the horror classics of my youth as a means of better understanding the horror releases of today. The cast comes off as a twisted horror genre variation of The Brat Pack, but fortunately they deliver solid performances across the board and sell the whole med student angle surprisingly well.
