About this deal

Hopefully it won't be too long of a wait because this one just served to whet my appetite for the larger adventure to come. I had a couple of failed attempts and the curled ends looked like tentacles to me, so the idea lead into this mini. Muscleini (Mussolini), Koba The Red (Stalin nickname), Temujin (Genghis Khan’s real name)… Any suggestions?

The problem is that the outlander Ryker was the one who attempted to kill her and he will have easier access now that their to be married. He doesn’t carry a scales for balance, he carries a spiked ball on a swinging chain to deliver his own version of balance. They did go a little long for my taste in some parts, but the descriptions are vivid and it wasn’t the same thing over and over. That's extremely rare for a doorstopper that tops out at 600+ pages but honestly, it felt like the story just flew by because of the unbelievable action sequences that Estes and Galley so brilliantly and skillfully convey. Kaleah, the female main character, has always been destined to "ascend" after being bonded ans prodThe 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. Tarkosi finds himself in a spot where people are likely to behead him first, ask questions later about how and why a demon was in his head. Even so, the sense of atmosphere and tension within these battles was great; I could perfectly imagine the smoke-filled air and the heat from the fire baking my skin like I was right there with Tarko trying my damnedest not to be struck down by demonfire atop the branches of a mile-high tree. The self sacrifice trope is one of the easiest ways an author can get me to drop their work and ignore any future writing. Pel tells Tarko that he suspects there’s more to the strange omens and events than simple marauders from the Scorch.

This started out kinda slow before picking up with an interesting event that changes the life course of our unlikely main character. Unfortunately the book ended on a cliffhanger, as many books do, which was fine, but my main issue with it was how abruptly it ended.Clearly a whole lot of effort has been put into developing this forest world and how it might all work in practice. The magic is big scale, there are hoards of demons with magic wielders of their own and they have come to Tarkosi’s world to harvest their shit because their world is dying. The highest-ranking general is a woman, by merit, not because she is a woman, and there are just as many women overseers and bosses as there are men. This is a great start to a new series, one with a rich world brilliantly brought to life by Galley and Estes that sucks you into its conflicts and makes you feel the heat of a demon's breath on the back of your neck.

The story centres around Tarkosy Tarelta, the son of a disgraced member of one of the higher families of the tree city of Shal 'Gara. For someone who wanted very badly to keep the demon in his head a secret or risk major consequences, he sure did talk to ‘himself” A LOT, out loud, where other people could hear him. Kidnapped by the blind beggar Pel, who has an addictive affinity for the drug known as urka seeds, Tarko finds himself swept up in the war party’s caravan. He’s not an asshole, but he does start to get a bigger head as his powers settle in and he gets used to wielding them. I highly recommend it to anyone who is into slow paced, character and story driven narratives with heeps of amazing worldbuilding. That is until demons from a broken world invade the forest realm of The Swathe, and an accident born of violence and dark magic intertwines Tarkosi’s fate with the greatest among them.
