In 2014, Briggs received the Phoenix Picture Book Award from the Children's Literature Association for The Bear (1994). The award committee stated: D. Martin, "Raymond Briggs", in Douglas Martin, The Telling Line: Essays on Fifteen Contemporary Book Illustrators (Julia MacRae Books, 1989), pp.227–42 It's an eccentric and excellent book with great drawings, the emphasis being the end of life and old age, the musings and mind of Raymonds last few years.. a b c (Greenaway Winner 1973). Living Archive: Celebrating the Carnegie and Greenaway Winners. CILIP. Retrieved 14 July 2012. A brutal reviewer once said that reading Martin Amis's notoriously self-indulgent novel Yellow Dog was 'like catching your favourite uncle masturbating in a school playground.' In this book, you will actually find Briggs depicting himself doing something not a million miles away from that, and doing so as if it's simply just a bit of fun. Illustrated with Briggs’s inimitable pencil drawings, some featured in last year’s BBC documentary, Raymond Briggs: Snowmen, Bogeymen & Milkmen, Time for Lights Out is a collection of short pieces, some funny, some melancholy, some remembering his wife who died young, others about the joy of grandchildren, of walking the dog… a b Bailey, Jason M. Briggs is survived by his step-children and step-grandchildren, who said in a statement that he “will be deeply missed”. Nevertheless, the children of his long-term partner, Liz Benjamin, provided inspiration and source material for other projects, notably The Puddleman (2004), which grew from a remark made by one of the young children on passing a puddle while the family were out walking in the countryside. Jordan, Justine (21 December 2019). "Raymond Briggs: 'Everything takes so bloody long when you're old' ". The Guardian. By the nature of its subject matter, Time for Lights Out is gloomy, but for some reason not dispiriting. Glimpses of beauty, humour and generosity keep shining through and, as always, Briggs’s drawings have a touch of magic about them, conjuring human beings and their foibles out of a few precious lines.’

I've always loved this author's work so when I saw this "new" book on the library shelves I simply had to borrow it. Briggs published this book in 2019 and he was telling the stories of many old men, but also his own. He passed away less than 3 years afterwards, aged 88. That's pretty impressive.

Fee Fi Fo Fum (1964) and The Snowman (1978) were Commended and Highly Commended runners-up for the Greenaway Medal. [17] [a] Briggs turned next to pastels in 1978’s The Snowman, a wordless story about a boy whose snowman comes to life. But this magical story was still grounded in harsh reality; the next morning, the boy wakes to find only the snowman’s hat and scarf listing on a pile of melting snow. ”I don’t have happy endings,” Briggs told the Radio Times in 2012. “I create what seems natural and inevitable. The snowman melts, my parents died, animals die, flowers die. Everything does. There’s nothing particularly gloomy about it. It’s a fact of life.”
