Yuzu is a Japanese citrus fruit. It tastes like the sound a band would make if their members were a tangerine, grapefruit and a lemon...and you could actually taste sound. Suze is, plainly, a bitter aperitif (which we are no strangers to here). The main ingredient is gentian root, specifically the species gentiana lutea (Great Yellow Gentian), which imparts the bitter, vegetal flavors the drink is known for. Gentian is also used in a number of other beverages — both alcoholic and non-alcoholic — such as Gentian (obvious, right?) and the soft drink, Moxie. The plant grows in Switzerland and France, which is a great segue into ... A fresh, green and citrusy French Sauvignon Blanc hits all the right notes when blended with our bright and refreshing Cucumber Premium Soda. Every gram of alcohol contains 7 calories, which is why your drink will always have calories even if all of the other macros are listed as 0 grams. Here at The Spinoff we reviewed and ranked a bunch, lumping them under the catch-all descriptor “new-wave RTDs”. Most were based on vodka or gin, with only Native Hard Sparkling – which, funnily enough, topped our tasting – getting its booze content from fermented cane sugar in the American hard seltzer fashion, and none of the bevvies actually calling themselves a seltzer. Lemon Juice: for the freshest flavor, use freshly squeezed lemon juice. I prefer to use meyer lemon because they have a subtly sweeter flavor but you can use any lemons you want. Every seltzer was tasted blind by a rotating panel of between five and nine Spinoffers, from seasoned seltzer consumers to first-timers, with the tasting expertly conducted by office manager Lucy Reymer. Each taster gave each seltzer a mark out of 10, which were averaged out to calculate the final scores (sorry about the decimal points, we’re a precise bunch). A drink with a pretty pale-blush pink colour with an intense floral and fruity aroma. It has a subtle fizz which leaves a delightfully refreshing taste on the palate. This would make an ideal mixer, with either vodka or gin, but it tastes equally impressive on its own. Anyway, as New Zealand is now experiencing its very own seltzer summer, The Spinoff decided to review and rank as many as we could find. That ended up being 36 different flavours, from 10 or so brands (we did it over three sessions on three consecutive days). It’s not all the seltzers available in New Zealand, but damn near. A couple of years ago someone over there decided to make boozy, lightly flavoured soda water and put it in cans, and people went nuts for it, particularly the White Claw brand – so much so that summer 2019 in the US was dubbed White Claw summer . There were memes. There was a shortage. Ah, pre-Covid life. This cookie is set by Rubicon Project to control synchronization of user identification and exchange of user data between various ad services. And then there are producers that take off on a grand mission to fill a void of their own determination and invest years of research into sourcing and taste-testing in search of the unconventional.Seltzer is a bloated market. La Croix came crashing through the doors, followed by the likes of Bubly and Waterloo. The old heads, Perrier, San Pellegrino, and Polar, maintain their classic vibes but have pivoted with flavors and cans, too, in an attempt to keep up with the saturated field. Then there’s the influx of hard seltzer, where the options seem limitless but not entirely compelling. If your fave isn’t in the top 10, sorry, but don’t take it to heart. Taste is, of course, subjective, and the thing about the hard seltzer – as I told a couple of tasters who asked me what attributes one should look out for in determining a good seltz from a shit one – is that it is not a complex beverage. As The Atlantic put it in 2019: “It’s cold, drinkable, and doesn’t taste like much. It neatly satisfies young consumers’ desires for affordable, convenient, portable, low-calorie, healthy-seeming alcohol options. In other words, it’s the perfect drink for people exhausted by rules.” Enjoy.
