The touchscreen is both responsive and reasonably intuitive to use; the camera itself is water resistant to a depth of 5m, while the Action Pod case is IPX4 water resistant; and it’s not heavy or bulky, either, with the Go 3 weighing a mere 35.5g and the Action Pod a further 96.3g. The Insta360 Go 3 is an ingenious camera. It’s well made and easy to use, and the design is impressively versatile. Image quality is pretty good, too and it’s stuffed with clever shooting modes.

While the Action Pod is magnetic, too, it's too heavy to mount sideways. Before I even cover image quality, I have to commend Insta360 for making a wireless controller that works so reliably. Having the small Action Pod to hand and seeing what the Go 3 was recording, even when it was out of eyeshot, was incredibly liberating. Yes, wireless control has been available via the smartphone app for a while, but the Action Pod's compact size made it feel much less clunky than navigating the Insta360 app when filming. The Action Pod features a touch screen with a flip-over design so you can set up shots from behind or in front of the lens. It also cleverly works as a remote control for the Go 3 when it is detached and can show a live view from it. Video caps out at 2.7K, while the highest resolution photos are 1:1 aspect ratio, 2560 x 2560 stills. For 4K filmmakers who want to splice action camera footage into their masterpieces, these low resolutions won't fit the bill. For casual action adventurers and family photographers and vloggers, though, the Insta360 Go 3 could be a perfect tool. A tiny cam means easy mounting! With its magnetic design and accessories, GO 3 gives you endless creative possibilities, with angles no other camera can handle. Think pets, helmets, or a fly-on-the-wall shot!

Once I felt I understood the product, it was time to take it for a spin, running down some stairs, vlogging on it, and capturing photos and videos in a range of environments. Importantly, I found myself gravitating to shooting modes I wouldn't normally use, specifically FreeFrame mode. So between the liberated filming style the Go 3's light weight enables, and the flexible shooting mode, Insta360's modular camera was starting to shine. Stills are captured in default mode which supports RAW photos, or PureShot HDR mode and there's also Night Shot and StarLapse capture too. Generally speaking, if you've got your phone to hand, as with lowlight video, it will outperform the Go 3 for photos too.This extendable desktop tripod provides you with a level platform to attach your Insta360 GO 3 to, ideal for providing a few extra inches of height, perfect for hands-free shooting. The legs can be extended from 8.7 -16.7 cm and have been designed with anti-slip rubber foot pads. As a bonus, though, the Insta360 Go 3 provides a wide selection of shooting modes, ranging from the usual timeshift, interval and slow motion modes, through to the new Freeform, which allows you to capture video that can be cropped to horizontal or vertical video modes in post. Also worth noting is that Insta360 has added a new loop mode, which makes this camera useful for anyone who wants to use the camera as a kind of cycling dashcam.
