About this deal

I've always loved the boarding school scenario from my first adventures at Mallory Towers to Hogwarts so I was excited to visit Crookhaven - a secret school for crooks.

He spent the early years of his childhood in Portugal and when he moved to the UK learned English through reading - instilling the importance of books in him from a young age. This debut puts a lovely new spin on the classic school story, offering a strong sense of community and togetherness in the face of adversity. Tarinan pohja rakennetaan hyvin, mutta lopussa sorrutaan perinteiseen kiirehtimiseen, kun kaikki selvinneet asiat pitää paketoida jollain tavalla yhteen eikä siihen tunnu enää riittävän sivuja tarpeeksi. Gabriel is hungry in more ways than one but he will learn some drastic information over the course of his first year at Crookhaven. He has a degree in Criminology and Psychology from Aberystwyth University and a Masters in Creative Writing and Publishing from City University, London, and currently works in Editorial at Bloomsbury Publishing. It's Gabriel's second year at Crookhaven and with the mystery of The Nameless still to uncover and the discovery of Maravel’s Maze, it’s going to be another year to remember. Penelope’s father decrees that she must be separated from her friends, but they continue to meet secretly at night after discovering Maravel's forgotten Maze, hidden deep beneath the lake. This book is like Hogwarts for thieves and i love the lessons they learn and the things the characters get up to like having to pick the lock to be able to go to the loo!

But instead of being arrested, he is invited by the mysterious Caspian Crook to attend Crookhaven - a school for thieves. The relationships are brilliant - each person’s connection to each other is totally unique and the writing reflects this brilliantly. As someone who never knew regular meals, this is something he doesn’t take for granted and he fills quickly. Each student comes to Crookhaven with their own set of skills and there is some division between those who gain entry as Merits and the Legacies, but the students all have something in common. Jonkin verran aika tuttuja nuorten kirjojen juonen käänteitä, mutta viihdyin silti hyvin tämän vaudikkaan sarjan avausosan parissa. Given the plethora of boarding school books out there, I know it's not easy to create a unique world and the tropes can be overdone, but this series totally nails it. There are several other characters as well that are a lot of fun, Villette Harkness the rival, Gabriel's sweet grandmother, and plucky new character Val. Because it is the outsiders, the forgotten, the ones who’ve always felt like they don’t belong, who end up changing the world.

He is devoted to her and though he steals, it is only ever enough to feed her or help her when work becomes too tough. This was a charming book and a lot of fun, filled with the heart of a classic middle grade boarding school story. But with the mystery of The Nameless still to uncover and the discovery of Maravel’s Maze, it’s going to be another year to remember.Mit ihm ist dem Autor ein vielschichtiger Protagonist gelungen, der seine Ecken, Kanten, Stärken und Schwächen hat. The plot is full of twists and turns, and cracks along at a very satisfying pace, and Crookhaven is definitely somewhere readers will want to spend time. One day Gabriel gets caught by a thief, but instead of steeling he invites Gabriel to Crookhaven, a remote school, teaching all about how to become a master of thievery by learning lock picking, forgery and "crimnastics" but they learn to steal from the rich and not the poor and to take things back to their rightful owners. Besides the comfort of knowing he doesn’t have to scheme and steal to put food in his belly, Crookhaven offers Gabe another first, the opportunity to make friends.
