About this deal

Dave brandishes a shotgun but is fatally injured in a struggle with the men, who arrange the scene to make the death look like suicide – an arrangement that is readily believed by Phyllis and the police. The present-day characters speak a phonetic cockney that frequently has to be read aloud (at least in your head) to understand it. In fact, I had a lot of trouble with the unfamiliar British slang, although I probably pieced together most of it. Even the two millennia of elapsed time that Self has allowed seem insufficient for this level of evolution, but there are hints within the text that the Motos might be products of some kind of genetic modification or design.

Exploring the highs and lows of his administration, from his brush with disaster over the Scottish question and his humiliation over Syria to his surprise election victory in 2015 and his controversial win on gay marriage, this fully updated edition offers a comprehensive assessment of Cameron’s legacy in office, weighing up the extraordinary achievements of Britain’s youngest Prime Minister for 200 years. But Will Self kept the focus quite personal, and created a strange and convincing world for it, without the need to drown everything in elaborate detail. The novel is set in an unspecified time in the future and tells the story of an isolated community living in a world that has become largely uninhabitable; they are utterly focused on creating a fully self-aware AI system known as ‘Dave’.They marry, and Michelle gives birth to a boy, Carl, but the marriage is unsuccessful, and Michelle eventually files for divorce, after which she resumes an earlier relationship with the television producer Cal Devenish. Dave Rudman, the eponymous hero, is a typical Self character: over-weight, smelly, prejudiced and a poor husband, a poor father and a poor son. It had some plucky parts and made me chuckle a few times, mainly with outlandish dialogue, however evaluating the book as a whole left me with very little passion one way or another. In the book, Self describes a future England which has been inundated with rising seas, leaving Hampstead as the only remaining part of London.

Syz loses his friends and meets strange characters who send him on a quest to uncover the real truth behind Dave.Self channels what were then (early 2000s) contemporary issues such as Fathers for Justice and the Iraq war in his present story in a creative and imaginative tale that plays with language and ideas.

Nevertheless, it required entirely too much of the little energy I have the end of the day, when I have time to read, to expend upon this book. And that language has normal words: Words like “drivers” then “motos”, “toyist”, “queers”, “screen”, “MadeinChina”, “lawyer”, “lettuce”, “intercom”, “irony”, “fare”, “flying”. However, that melt spanned around thirteen millennia (between 19,000 years ago and 6000 years ago) with an average rate of sea-level rise of one metre per century. Will Self is the author of many novels and books of non-fiction, including Great Apes, The Book of Dave, How the Dead Live, which was shortlisted for the Whitbread Novel of the Year 2002, The Butt, winner of the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction 2008, Umbrella, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2012, and Shark. As an example, burgerkine is a word used to describe cattle and cloakyfing is used to indicate a Muslim burka.

However, as Ballard noted in The Drowned World, melting ice requires – and generates – a hotter climate. Aside from the notion of family, this novel is a prescient religious allegory, especially in recent times when people have yet to learn from history.

Zaphod Beeblebrox was eager to “meet the meat” which suggested which cuts of itself would be most tasty and then, before popping off to slaughter itself, assured the traumatised Arthur Dent that “I’ll be very humane. W]hether or not Self's Hammier chapters will endure, there is no doubt that those written in the voice of Dave offer just about the funniest and most depressing vision we could have of where we are here in 'Ing' right now.
